dark empty jail cellThe Wayne County Sheriff’s Department operates the three jail facilities in Wayne County. These facilities house roughly 2,600 inmates on any given day. Defendants and inmates housed in the various facilities range from those awaiting trial to convicted felons to US Marshall detainees and everything in between.

Division I: Andrew C. Baird Detention Facility

570 Clinton Street, Detroit, MI 48226

Persons detained or sentenced to this facility can be either male or female offenders as well as those who are awaiting trial and those who have been adjudicated. Many inmates sentenced to the Andre C. Baird Detention Facility are ruled to have ongoing medical or mental health needs and are segregated from the general population. Probate hearings for inmates with mental health concerns are performed daily via video conference call. In addition, prisoners, who are considered low to medium risk, are housed together in the jail’s general population.

Division II: Old Wayne County Jail

525 Clinton Street, Detroit MI 48226

The Old Wayne County Jail is a linear supervision facility that opened in 1929. The design of Division II is considered to be the old style of jail construction. This layout places cells in a linear hallway that does not allow for constant supervision by corrections staff.

Division III: William Dickerson Detention Facility

3501 Hamtramck Drive, Hamtramck, MI 48212

Opened in 1991, the William Dickerson Detention Facility was designed to be a direct supervision facility that allows staff to observe and be in immediate contact with inmates at all times.

General Notes On Posting Bond in Wayne County

General prisoner information for any of the facilities can be obtained by calling 313.224.2222

While any person can be bailed out at any time, the paperwork for bail will not be processed during a shift change. 

In addition to the bond that you will pay, there is a fee of $10 for each bond that is paid and a $12 charge for a booking fee. All costs of the bond, including these fees, must be paid in full to ensure the release of an inmate. 

Bail may be paid at a number of district courts when they are open. Bail bonds for Divisions I and II may be posted at the Division I facility. Bonds for detainees in the Division III facility must be paid at that facility.
