Grand Rapids was founded in 1826 by Louis Campau, and incorporated later in 1850. Located roughly 25 miles east of Lake Michigan, it serves as the county seat of Kent County and is the second largest city in Michigan.

Prior to settlement, the territory was inhabited by various indigenous cultures eventually falling under the control of the Ottawa Native American Tribe. The city of Grand Rapids originated as a humble missionary and fur-trading post that gradually developed into a furniture manufacturing hub in the latter half of the nineteenth century, earning it the nickname “Furniture City.”

Today, He and his wife are buried on the property of the presidential library and museum bearing his name.
